Stocks rise on earnings, economic reports

NEW YORK (AP) — Stocks are rising after reports that showed wholesale prices climbed for the first time since March and a big jump in industrial production.

A slight improvement in the weak housing market and better-than-expected earnings from Home Depot and Wal-Mart Stores also gave investors a reason to buy stocks Tuesday.

Prices at the wholesale level rose 0.2 percent in July, lessening fears of deflation. Industrial production rose 1 percent, double what expectations were.

The Dow Jones industrial average is up 62.75, or 0.6 percent, at 10,364.38. The Standard & Poor’s 500 index is up 7.37, or 0.7 percent, at 1,086.75, while the Nasdaq composite index is up 16.69, or 0.8 percent, at 2,198.56.
