AMERICAN LEAGUE

Rays 6, Rangers 4

ST. PETERSBURG, FLA.

Carlos Pena hit a tiebreaking single during a four-run eighth inning and the Rays rallied to beat Cliff Lee and the Rangers in a potential playoff preview. Lee outlasted David Price in a marquee matchup of All-Star aces and was given a late lead when Texas scored twice in the top of the eighth to go up 4-2. But Carl Crawford hit a run-scoring grounder and Evan Longoria tied it with a single before Pena made it 5-4.

Tigers 3, Yankees 1

NEW YORK

Max Scherzer pitched two-hit ball for six shutout innings and shaky closer Jose Valverde got Derek Jeter to ground into a game-ending double play with the bases loaded, lifting the Tigers. The Tigers took a 3-0 lead into the ninth — the Yankees were close to being shut out in consecutive games for the first time since 1999.

Orioles 5, Mariners 4, 11 innings

BALTIMORE

Nick Markakis led off the 11th inning with a double and scored on a two-out bunt by Adam Jones, lifting the Orioles.

NATIONAL LEAGUE

Mets 3, Astros 1

HOUSTON

Carlos Beltran homered and the New York Mets took the lead in the ninth inning on a wild pitch by Houston closer Matt Lindstrom in a win over the Astros. Hisanori Takahashi worked a perfect ninth for his first save.

Braves 4, Dodgers 3

ATLANTA

Melky Cabrera’s two-run single off Octavio Dotel with the bases loaded in the ninth inning capped a three-run rally that lifted the Braves. Dotel took over for Hong-Chih Kuo (3-2), who failed to protect a 3-1 lead.

Padres 9, Cubs 5

CHICAGO

Kevin Correia pitched six scoreless innings and hit an RBI double, leading the Padres. Miguel Tejada was 4 for 5 with a double and two RBIs and Chris Denorfia added three hits for the NL West-leading Padres.
