Montero, Scrappers rally to drop Lowell

LOWELL, Mass.

Moises Montero went 2 for 5 with a homer, three RBIs and two runs to lead the Mahoning Valley Scrappers to a come-from-behind 10-8 victory over Lowell in a New York-Penn League game on Sunday.

Monter’s two-run homer in the seventh briefly tied the game at 5 before Lowell scored a run in the bottom of the inning to take the lead.

The Scrappers followed with five runs in the top of the eighth and James Ehlert pitched 11/3 innings of scoreless relief to close out the game and earn his fifth save.

Brian Heere went 2 for 5 and scored twice for the Scrappers (24-33), who took two of three from the league’s worst team.

Chase Burnette and Nicholas Bartolone each added two hits for Mahoning Valley, which has the next two days off before starting a three-game homestand against Batavia on Wednesday. The NYPL All-Star game is Tuesday.

The Scrappers are in fifth place in the six-team Pinckney Division, a half-game ahead of Auburn.

They have 19 games left in the season.

Kolbrin Vitek went 4 for 5 with a homer, three RBIs and three runs scored for Lowell (16-40).
