“The Big C” (10:30 P.M., SHOWTIME): Brace yourself for a provocative new series that tries to find the humor in cancer. The luminous Laura Linney plays Cathy Jamison, a repressed, play-it-safe wife and mother who gets a loud wake-up call in the form of Stage 4 melanoma. The excellent cast also features Oliver Platt and Gabourey Sidibe.
