Scrappers’ bullpen loses hold on lead

Staff report

Lowell, MA.

The Mahoning Valley Scrappers had relief pitching issues for the second consecutive game, dropping Saturday’s contest to the Lowell Spinners 4-3.

Reliever James Reichenbach entered the game in the eighth inning and allowed a leadoff single Bryce Brentz. He followed that with two walks. A single by Kolbrin Vitek scored the go-ahead run when Bentz crossed home plate.

Reichenbach pitched just one inning. He allowed two hits and walked two batters. He didn’t have a strikeout, and allowed the one run.

Starter Casey Gaynor allowed five hits, but scattered them throughout five innings. He allowed one run, struck out three and walked one. He was relived by Kyle Smith in the sixth.

Smith struck out two, but also allowed two earned runs in his only inning. He gave up a two-run single to Jonatoni Garcia, which scored Brandon Jacobs and Chia-Chu Chen. Jacobs doubled, and Chen walked to get on board.

The Scrappers (23-33) led after scoring a run in the first and third innings.

Chase Burnette scored on a Diego Seastrunk in the first. Seastrunk then scored on Brian Heere’s second triple of the season.
