Ehlert stays cool as Scrappers down Spinners

James Ehlert came into the game in the bottom of the ninth inning and the bases loaded, but managed to quell the threat and earn his fourth save of the year.

The Mahoning Valley Scrappers scored one run in the third, sixth and ninth innings and held on for a 3-2 victory over the Lowell Spinners on Friday. The Scrappers will play two more games in Lowell before taking a two-day hiatus for the All-Star break and then return home to Eastwood Field.

Starting pitcher Michael Goodnight gave the Scrappers (23-32) three solid innings and allowed only one hit. Reliever Kirk Wetmore pitched four innings, allowing one run on two hits, ansd struck out five. He earned his second win of the year.

Takafumi Nakamura entered the game the game in the eighth inning. He got the first batter out, but then gave up two hits and a run. He loaded the bases in the ninth, paving the way for Ehlert to help stop the bleeding.

Ehlert got the first batter he faced, Bryce Brents, to groundout to him. Ehlert tossed it home for the second out. Ehlert got the next batter, Jose Garcia, to strike out looking.

Offensively, Carlos Moncrief had two hits and scored a run.
