Boardman soccer team wins Kent tournament

The Boardman High School boys soccer team won the Kent State University high school tournament by defeating Woodridge 3-2 in the championship game July 18.

With a 5-1 record heading into the finals, Boardman met undefeated Woodridge (6-0) in the final match.

Boardman was down 2-0 to Woodridge in the finals with four minutes to go in regulation time when Christian Silvestri scored Boardman’s first goal.

With time winding down, Boardman’s Zaire Morrison was fouled in the penalty area with 22 seconds left in regulation. Zaire scored his penalty kick to tie the game.

A 10-minute overtime period was played and the first to score would win.

Christian scored the game-winner with 1:04 left in the overtime on a rebound after a shot by Zaire was deflected by the Woodridge goalie.

Anthony Calutti had six saves for Boardman.
