Yankees sink Scrappers on homer in 10th

STATEN ISLAND, N.Y.

Kelvin De Leon hit a three-run homer in the bottom of the 10th to lift the Staten Island Yankees to a 4-1 victory over the Mahoning Valley Scrappers in a New York-Penn League game on Thursday.

One day after combining on a one-hitter to beat the Yankees, Scrappers pitchers held Staten Island to just four hits over the first nine innings.

Mike Rayl started and went 52/3 innings, giving up one run on one hit with three walks and nine strikeouts, lowering his ERA to 3.10. Greg Rosario added 21/3 innings of shutout relief, giving up three hits while striking out one and walking one for Mahoning Valley (22-32).

Julio Ramirez (1-2) pitched the final 11/3 innings to get the loss. Kevin Fontanez had the lone extra base hit for the Scrappers, doubling and scoring in the sixth inning. Carlos Moncrief, Nicholas Bartolone, Chase Burnette and Moises Montero also had hits.

Chase Whitley pitched a scoreless 10th inning to pick up the win for the Yankees.

The Scrappers will continue their six-game road trip as they begin a three-game series against the Lowell Spinners at 7:05 tonight.

Mahoning Valley has Monday off and the NYPL All-Star game is Tuesday. The Scrappers will then play a three-game series against Batavia at Eastwood Field starting Wednesday.
