N. Dakota man swallows other inmate’s glasses

BISMARCK, N.D.

A North Dakota inmate was not afraid of making a spectacle of himself when he grabbed another suspect’s glasses and started to eat them.

Burleigh County Sheriff’s Maj. Les Witkowski says the 42-year-old inmate at the county detention center became frustrated Aug. 1 when he was not able to talk to the chaplain, so he swallowed both lenses and a piece of the metal frame.

He had been booked on an aggravated-assault charge just five hours earlier.

Witkowski says the inmate was taken to a hospital emergency room but was returned to jail after doctors determined he was OK.

The glasses were worth $250. Authorities are considering a criminal-mischief charge against him.

Assistant State’s Attorney Lloyd Suhr says he’ll be looking into the incident.

Ga. robber takes cash, apologizes before fleeing

WATKINSVILLE, Ga.

Deputy sheriffs in Georgia say an armed robber emptied the cash register at a video store, then told the clerk he had a drug problem and was sorry for the stickup.

The suspect fled toward a couple of schools Wednesday morning in the town of Watkinsville, about 60 miles east of Atlanta. The schools were locked down briefly.

Vision Video clerk Zach Henderson says he was talking on his cell phone at the store when he walked out of a back room and was confronted by the robber. He says the robber asked him to hang up and hand him the cash.

Oconee County Sheriff Scott Berry says about 40 law-enforcement officers from around the state broke up a training session to search for the suspect. Police are still looking for the robber.

Drinking alone? Remote Scotland pub goes on sale

EDINBURGH, Scotland

Drinkers uninterested in designated drivers should consider the new offering on Scotland’s real-estate market — the Old Forge.

It is Scotland’s most-remote pub — with no roads in or out. Located on the Knoydart Peninsula in the West Highlands, the thirsty must hike about 18 miles from the nearest road or travel seven miles across the sea loch from the town of Mallaig.

Owners Ian and Jackie Robertson are retiring and seeking offers starting at $1.2 million.

Jackie Robertson said Thursday she’s enjoyed the pub, which she describes as ideally situated for those who want to get away from it all.

But she says it’s time “to stop pouring pints and start drinking them.”
