Mahoning commissioners abolish 26 jobs in JFS department

YOUNGSTOWN — To balance Mahoning County’s public assistance budget, the county commissioners unanimously authorized the abolition of 26 jobs in the income maintenance section of the Department of Job and Family Services.

The 26 layoffs resulting from the authorization will take effect Aug. 27 and Sept. 3.

The furloughs authorized today are occurring due to a $1 million deficit in the fund used to pay income maintenance staff salaries, said Judee Genetin, JFS director.

The department has lost $6 million in combined federal and state funding since July 2007, she added.
