1-hitter lifts M.V. past S.I.

STATEN ISLAND, N.Y.
Five Mahoning Valley pitchers combined on a one-hit shutout as the Scrappers won their third straight, defeating Staten Island 2-0 in a New York-Penn League game Wednesday.
Alex Kaminsky (5-3) started and pitched five innings, giving up the lone hit with a walk and four strikeouts for the Scrappers (22-31), who will play one more game in Staten Island at noon today then play three in Lowell, Mass.
Kaminsky, who was one of three Scrappers chosen for the upcoming NYPL All-Star game, lowered his ERA to 1.95 — sixth best in the league. Kaminsky signed as a non-drafted free agent out of Wright State in June.
Kyle Smith (two walks, two strikeouts) and J.D. Goryl each pitched an inning of relief, while Dale Dickerson (three walks, one strikeout) threw two-thirds of an inning and J.D. Reichenbach (one strikeout) pitched the final 11/3 to earn his second save.
Kevin Rucker went 2 for 3 with his first homer of the season. He also scored twice. Brian Heere had two hits, including a double, and an RBI while Nicholas Bartolone also had two hits.
Nick McCoy had the lone hit for Staten Island, singling with two outs in the bottom of the third inning.
Mahoning Valley returns home Aug. 18.
