NEW MIDDLETOWN

Mayor Harry Kale announced that village council will meet with Springfield Township trus- tees to discuss forming a joint fire district at 7 p.m. Monday at the Village Municipal Building.

The meeting is open to the public. Kale said there would be limited public comment and added the meeting could be adjourned “if it gets out of hand.”

For months, village council and township trustees have been considering forming a joint fire district or a contract arrangement in which the township would provide fire protection to the village. However this would be the first formal meeting with both attending.

The district had appeared to be dead after none of the township’s three trustees showed up for a May 3 informational meeting sponsored by the village. But Springfield Township Trustee Rick Jones attended village council’s June meeting and asked them to reconsider.

Also at council’s meeting Monday, Police Chief Vince D’Egidio reported that thanks to an alert resident’s complaint, a blacktop scam operation was stopped recently in the village. He said that Fischer Paving of Texarkana, Ark., was fined for soliciting without a permit. A computer check showed that there are complaints in eight states about the company.

In other business, Brian McCombs was named to a one-year term on the village zoning committee beginning immediately.
