Fitch’s Berdis picks Slippery Rock

Fitch High graduate Stephanie Berdis will continue her softball career at Slippery Rock.
Berdis, the daughter of Ron and Kim Berdis, earned first team All-Federal League honors and honorable mention all-district this spring after batting .421 as an outfielder/first baseman. She also played basketball for the Falcons and carried a 3.8 grade point average.
Miller judges IBF upset
ST. LOUIS
Tom Miller of Mineral Ridge was a judge last weekend as challenger Cornelius Bundradge of Detroit defeated champion Cory Spinks of St. Louis for the IBF junior middleweight championship.
It was Miller’s 57th world title bout. His next assignment is Saturday in Panama City, Panama, for the WBA bantamweight crown between champion Anselmo Moreno of Panama and challenger Nehomar Cermeno of Venezuela.
Volleyball rules meeting is set

The Mahoning Valley Volleyball Officials Association will hold a local rules meeting Thursday at 5:30 p.m. at the Salem High School cafeteria. The state meeting will follow at 7 p.m. in the gymnasium.
Poland golfers are runners-up
GENEVA
The Poland High boys golf team finished runner-up at the Bronko Invitational at Hemlock Springs golf course. The team posted a score of 322. Scoring for Poland were Steve Sofocleous, 76; Billy Stanton, 81; Zack Fortunato, 82; and Drew Calcagni, 83.
Chardon won the event with a score a score of 306.
Ursuline’s Marr will compete

Ursuline High first baseman Sarah Marr has been chosen to compete in the Queen of Diamonds Showcase East at Hofstra University in Hempstead, Long Island, N.Y.
Softball players from 17 states and two Canadian provinces will participate.
Pizza Splash 5K set for Friday

The 26th Italian Pizza Splash 5K will be at Courthouse Square on Friday at 7 p.m.
Awards will be presented to the top three male and female overall winners, as well as to the first three finishers in each of 13 male and 11 female age groups.
Entry forms are available at the YMCA or online at www.gopherarun.com. Runners can also register between 5:45 and 6:45 p.m. on race day at the YMCA in Warren.

Akron soccer ranked number one

Already ranked preseason No. 1 in the nation by the College Soccer News, the University of Akron men’s soccer program got another boost Tuesday by earning the top spot in the National Soccer Coaches Association of America (NSCAA) poll.
All four College Cup teams from a year ago earned the top four spots in the rankings as Virginia, Wake Forest and North Carolina were listed second through fourth, respectively. The Zips will face No. 4 UNC in the first game of the regular season on Sept. 3 in Chapel Hill, N.C., before traveling to Winston-Salem, N.C., to meet No. 3 Wake Forest on Sept. 5.
Brazil defeats USA, 2-0

Neymar scored in his national team debut, Alexandre Pato added a goal late in the first half and new-look Brazil rolled over the United States 2-0 Tuesday night in the first match for both nations since a disappointing World Cup.
Neymar, the 18-year-old Santos sensation, had just switched with Robinho and moved from the left flank to the center. Andre Santos came down the left side and crossed, and Neymar beat Jonathan Bornstein and sent a header inside Tim Howard’s left post in the 29th minute.
