Career criminal gets more jail time for guard assault here

YOUNGSTOWN — A 45-year-old inmate who was already serving a long prison term at the Ohio State Penitentiary on the city’s East Side has been sentenced to an extra eight consecutive years there for throwing a pot of boiling water on a prison guard’s head and face.

Judge R. Scott Krichbaum of Mahoning County Common Pleas Court imposed the maximum sentence today on Gregory Curry. Curry pleaded guilty to one count of felonious assault in the March 3 incident.

The sentence will be nonappealable because it was agreed to by the prosecution and defense and adopted by the judge.

The guard, who suffered extensive first- and second-degree burns, is still recovering from his injuries, said J. Michael Thompson, an assistant county prosecutor.
