The Columbiana County Fair wrapped up Sunday with its traditional combine demolition and auto- demolition derbies.
Tresa Hall, the secretary and treasurer for the fair board, said Monday the fair in terms of turnout, “was about the same as last year.”
Fair officials did not have the attendance figures for this fair or the 2009 fair available immediately.
It rained intermittently Tuesday and Wednesday, but there were no major storms.
Hall was busy paying the premiums for winners in the various entries, which are often only a couple of dollars. Several winners turned the money right back to help fund the junior fair.
Don Humphrey Jr., the vice president of the fair board, said, “We had a wonderful fair. It was a fair we were proud of.”
The board this year added another fairway that intersected the old ones and generally spruced up the fairgrounds. Board members asked vendors about the improvements. The result was approval in the setup at the fair and its appearance. The fair hires a group to pick up trash at the fairgrounds after it closes each night.
Helicopter rides were offered at the fair for the first time and were very popular.
People also were moved by a program to recognize local veterans who had received a Purple Heart after being wounded in World War II, Korea or Vietnam.
Humphrey said that the special ceremony likely will be a one-time event because of its emotional impact. People who saw it, he said, “won’t forget it for a long time.”
John Wolf, the president of the fair, said of the fair, “No one was disappointed.”
