Members of the Mahoning County Sheriff’s Office Dive Team pulled the body of a 47-year-old city man from McKelvey Lake on Sunday night. His identity wasn’t released.
Capt. William H. Hack Sr. of the dive team said he was called about 8:18 p.m., and the team pulled the man from the water at 9:01.
“He dropped his fishing pole [into the lake] and tried to retrieve it,” Hack said.
Firefighters said it’s believed that the man was fishing from the Oak Street bridge with another person, who went for help when he went into the water and didn’t come back up.
They said the water is between 8 feet and 10 feet deep where the man went in.

The Ohio State Highway Patrol in Southington is investigating a motorcycle vs. deer accident that sent the motorcyclist and his passenger to the hospital.
Robert J. Namola, 41, of Warren, was driving a motorcycle about 10:45 p.m. Saturday along Hoagland-Blackstub Road when a deer entered the road and Namola struck it. The motorcycle caught fire.
Both Namola and his passenger, Debra Logston, 47, of Hubbard, were thrown from the bike. Neither was wearing a helmet.
Namola was flown to UPMC Mercy Hospital in Pittsburgh, where he was listed Sunday night in critical condition. An OSP news release says Log-ston was transported to Forum Health Trumbull Memorial Hospital, but the hospital had no information about her.
