Farmers: Ohio roof collapse hurts cabbage business
Associated Press
FREMONT, Ohio
Cabbage farmers in northern Ohio say a roof collapse at a local sauerkraut company has been draining business.
Farmers who grow cabbage for the Fremont Co. say their crop’s starting to spoil because they haven’t found anyone else to buy it.
But a spokesman for the Fremont Co. says the company will pay the farmers that grow its cabbage because they’re under contract.
The Fremont Co. has been closed since its roof caved in July 7, killing one worker and injuring three others.
Farmer Lynn Martin says he usually starts harvesting cabbage in mid-July and sells the last of it by October.
Martin’s farm also grows soybeans and corn, but he says cabbage is an important part of their farm.
