Annual book sale

EAST PALESTINE

Friends of the East Palestine Memorial Library will have its annual book sale and silent auction from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. Thursday and 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Friday in the basement of the library.

Featured in the sale are hardback and paperback books, records, VHS tapes, DVDs, magazines, books on tape, puzzles and games. Various items and gift certificates are included in a silent auction.

Hospital fundraiser

WARREN

For the third year, Dr. Farid Naffah, a Warren gastroenterologist, will sponsor his “Evening Under the Stars” dining and cultural benefit at 5 p.m. Aug. 28 at the Cadobaz (Culture, Arts and Dining of Bazetta). It provides the money for prescription- medication programs for elderly patients at Trumbull Memorial Hospital and St. Joseph’s Medical Center. Past events have generated nearly $40,000.

An art exhibit will be shown featuring Victoria Yin. Dinner will be provided by Michael Alberini. Entertainment will begin with Eric Thompson, a local magician, followed by Dan Long, a celebrated comedian and former writer for “Saturday Night Live.” Live music by Chook Alberini will conclude the evening.

Salem duplex fire

SALEM

A Saturday night fire caused an estimated $10,000 damage to the structure and contents of an apartment in a duplex at 480 Washington Ave.

Both apartments were occupied when the fire was reported at 6:20 p.m., but there were no injuries, Salem fire officials said.

The cause of the blaze is undetermined. It was confined to a second-story bedroom of the front duplex occupied by Terri Helman and her brother, Jerry Copley. The back apartment was occupied by Marcell Williams, who was awakened by police and escorted out unharmed.
