Ashley Mickey and friend Courtney Schwind continued to raise funds for their 2-year-old neighbor Brett Wilcox.
The 8-year-old girls hosted a lemonade and candy sale July 23 in front of the Medical Supply Store on Ohltown Road and state Route 46 from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. and raised $4,326 to help combat the medical costs to treat Wilcox’s Adult Acute Myeloid Leukemia.
The girls heard about Wilcox’s illness and wanted to help. They came up with the idea while riding the school bus and their mothers helped them carry out their plan.
Area concession owner Kenny Keich donated a Lemon Shake trailer, Austintown Sunrise Pizza donated pizzas to sell and Mahoning Medical Supply owner Chris Gaca donated parking lot space to host the event.
“The response from the community was overwhelming,” said Ashley’s mother, Lynn Mickey. “The girls did an amazing job, they raised $4,326 and we are still receiving donations.”
Ashley and Courtney presented the Wilcox family with the funds July 26, the day before the family took off for Brett’s stem cell transplant Aug. 9 in Cincinnati.
