The summer gym program at Canfield High School offers students the opportunity to earn their required physical education credit during summer vacation.

The program is designed for students who would rather take gym class in the summer instead of during the school year and for those who have scheduling conflicts with other classes.

The class was held from 8 a.m. to noon June 15 through July 2, and was offered to all high school students. Not every school offers the summer gym program, so students from other schools may also enroll in the class and earn credit at their school.

Ronie Haurin and Linda Magyar, teachers at C.H. Campbell Elementary School, and Al Frasco, who substitute teaches at Canfield High School after retiring from Austintown, were the instructors for the class of 123 students.

“This program gives the students ideas for lifetime activities and can help them develop lifetime skills. They are able to get out to parks and enjoy other activities they can’t do during the school year in gym class,” Haurin said.

Aside from activities in the high school gym, students participated in numerous outdoor activities, went golfing, walked to Greasel Park and Fair Park, traveled to the bike trail, went bowling, played miniature golf at Niles Putt Putt and traveled to the Salem Community Center to play basketball and volleyball, swim and play soccer on the indoor field.
