Couple leaves $35M to Cleveland hospital
CLEVELAND (AP) — Officials say a $35 million gift is the largest single donation ever received in the 143-year history of Cleveland’s University Hospitals.
The money from the estate of Dr. Donald Goodman and Ruth Weber Goodman will fund a cancer research center that will be named for the couple at University Hospitals Case Medical Center.
In 2000, Donald Goodman was successfully treated for a type of leukemia by University Hospitals doctors using an experimental drug.
Goodman was a retired dentist who liked to invest in the stock market. He died in 2007.
His wife, who died in 2008, had inherited her father’s estate from the manufacturing business he founded.
The Goodmans’ granddaughter says through their estate they wanted to pass along the gift of hope to others.
