Pa. woman run over on Fla. beach dies 10 years later

ABINGTON, Pa. (AP) — Family members say a Pennsylvania woman has died 10 years after she was left in a vegetative state when she and a friend where run over by an SUV on a Florida beach.

Twenty-six-year-old Megan Hamlin died Monday after suffering a seizure at the group home where she lived in suburban Philadelphia.

Hamlin was 16 when she and Jessica Rowan were struck as they sunbathed on a beach in St. Augustine. Hamlin came out of a coma after being struck but remained in a vegetative state. Rowan was left with serious facial injuries.

The SUV’s driver, Joseph B. Edmondson Jr., pleaded no-contest to careless driving.

Vehicles were permitted on the Anastasia State Recreation Area beach at the time. Florida has since banned driving on that beach.
