Poland girls earn top seed at regional

CARTHAGE, Mo.
Poland defeated Antioch, Ill., 6-0 to finish unbeaten in pool play at the Little League Softball Central Regional tournament.
Poland (4-0) is the top seed and has a first-round bye for the bracket tournament, that begins today.
Aleah Hughes limited Illinois to two sixth-inning singles and struck out 12.
In pool play, Hughes worked 13 innings allowing no runs and seven hits, striking out 23.
Poland broke a scoreless tie in the fourth when Arlia Duarte walked and scored on Dani Rutana’s double. Rutana later scored on a wild pitch and Cara Kalouris later walked, went to second on a passed ball, stole third and scored on an error to make it 3-0.
In the fifth, Abby Masluk, who had three hits, singled, stole second and third and scored on a double steal to make it 4-0.
Poland added its final runs in the sixth. Kat Wilson walked, Masluk singled and Claire Testa walked to load the bases. Deemer drove in a run when she was hit by a pitch, and Hughes forced in a run when she walked.

Carlie Lattanzio pitched a two-hit shutout as Poland defeated Conneaut 2-0 in the state tournament.
Carlie Lattanzio added a triple and Jillian Pennman a single for Poland, which will play Wheelersburg today at 6 p.m.
Poland defeated Clyde on Monday, 9-3, as Jillian Pennman pitched a complete game with nine strikeouts. Gina Ungaro had a home run and a double, while Pennman, Carlie Lattanzio, Lexie Hughes and Jen Eich had two hits apiece..
On Sunday, Poland lost to Wheelersburg, 5-3. Ungaro, Audrey Schweers and Pennman had RBIs.
