No morning glory: Scrappers lose again
Staff report
BATAVIA, N.Y.
The Mahoning Valley Scrappers’ hitting woes didn’t subside in the bright sunshine.
Playing a rare morning-start game, the Scrappers (16-29) were held to just four singles in an 8-1 loss to the Batavia Muckdogs.
The loss was the third straight for Mahoning Valley, which is tied with Auburn for the second-most losses in the New York-Penn League.
Batavia (27-17) got home runs by Colin Wash, a solo shot in the sixth inning, and Jonathon Rodriguez, a two-run bomb, in the eighth inning, to sweep the short two-game series.
Casey Gaynor (3-2) started for the Scrappers, allowing two earned runs in 42/3 innings.
James Reichenbach, J.D. Goryl and Kyle Smith finished in relief.
Christopher Corrigan (3-1) was the winner. He went the first five innings for Batavia, allowing three hits and one run.
The Scrappers scored in the fifth inning. Kevin Fontanez walked to lead off the frame and went to third on a single by Carlos Moncrief.
Fontanez then scored when Kevin Rucker hit into a double play, somewhat fitting for the Scrappers’ offense-challenged season.
Moncrief went 2 for 4 to lead the Scrappers at the plate.
