Poland softball wins again; one win from a top seed

CARTHAGE, MO.
Poland defeated International Falls, Minn., 14-1, to improve to 3-0 in the Little League softball 11-12-year-old Central Regional on Monday.
Poland plays Illinois today at 6 p.m., and with a win, would earn the top seed in its pool and a bye in the first round of the bracket tournament.
Maddie Rowe had a RBI single, and two-run double, and drove in a run when she was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded. Dani Rutana added three RBIs on a pair of singles, and Kat Wilson had three RBIs on a single and bases-loaded walk. Claire Testa, Jenna Shettler and Megan Marsico all had one RBI each.
Aleah Hughes, Arlia Duarte and Testa combined on the pitching. They allowed just two hits and struck out six.

Canfield fell to Shelby, 9-4, in a semifinal game at the 9-10 baseball state tournament.
Dom Velasquez went 3 for 4 with a RBI and he scored a run, and Nick O’Hara added two hits and one RBI.
O’Hara, Velasquez and Jack Rafoth combined on the pitching for Canfield, which will play Defiance today at 7 p.m.

Dave Sugar Excavating lost its last two games of the tournament, but coach Terry Dobson felt the team was good enough to play with any in the tournament.
In a 6-3 loss to the Memphis Tigers, a five-run third inning was the undoing for Dave Sugar.
The Tigers had only three hits in the game, but managed to churn out six runs on walks and an error.
Dave Sugar also fell to the Maryland Monarchs, 7-3.
Again the third inning was the Achilles heel for Dave Sugar, which allowed five runs in the frame.
Dave Sugar had five hits.
