The Mahoning County Educational Service Center is to receive $997,098 to improve history teaching.

U.S. Sen. George V. Voinovich announced that he had helped secure nearly $3 million in Teaching American History grants for three Ohio school districts to improve the quality of their American-history education.

The grants are administered by the U.S. Department of Education, and Voinovich wrote letters on behalf of the three districts.

The other two districts, Hamilton City in southern Ohio and Stark County’s ESC, are to received $1 million and $990,006, respectively.

To receive funding for the competitive five-year grants, applicants had to propose a program defining how funds would provide opportunities to broaden teachers’ understanding of American history.
