1610: During his fourth voyage to the Western Hemisphere, English explorer Henry Hudson sails into what is now known as Hudson Bay.
1876: Frontiersman “Wild Bill” Hickok is shot and killed while playing poker at a saloon in Deadwood, Dakota Territory, by Jack McCall, who is later hanged.
1909: The original Lincoln “wheat” penny first goes into circulation, replacing the “Indian Head” cent.
1923: The 29th president of the United States, Warren G. Harding, dies in San Francisco; Vice President Calvin Coolidge becomes president.
1934: German President Paul von Hindenburg dies, paving the way for Adolf Hitler’s complete takeover.
1943: During World War II, Navy boat PT-109, commanded by Lt. John F. Kennedy, sinks after being rammed by the Japanese destroyer Amagiri off the Solomon Islands.
1980: Eighty-five people are killed when a bomb explodes at the train station in Bologna, Italy.
1990: Iraq invades Kuwait, seizing control of the oil-rich emirate. (The Iraqis are later driven out in Operation Desert Storm.)

1985: Several hundred United Steelworkers rallying in Warren in support of striking USW members at Wheeling Pittsburgh Steel begin chanting “nationwide, nationwide” in response to a suggestion by Frank Valenta, USW Distric 26, that the federal government isn’t paying attention.
The Girard Board of Education begins dismissal proceedings against Superintendent Ronald Schuster, suspending him without pay effective immediately.
1970: Members of Youngstown State University’s professional music fraternity, Phi Mu Alpha, collect and recondition 50 musical instruments that will be sent to a school in Paraguay. The project was conceived by Gordon Campbell of Niles, a 1968 YSU graduate and Peace Corps volunteer.
Gov. James A. Rhodes orders a special election Sept. 22 to fill the unexpired term of the late U.S. Rep. Michael J. Kirwan.
Production of artillery shells is virtually halted at the Ravenna Arsenal as a strike by more than 1,000 employees continues in a dispute over safety procedures.
1960: Charles B. Cushwa Jr., president of Commercial Shearing and Stamping Co. and a member of the Youngstown Board of Education, warns his associates against going too far in seeking to purchase from local dealers. Picking the lowest, best bid is the board’s responsibility, he says.
Seven Boardman firefighters make precautionary trips to St. Elizabeth Hospital after inhaling fumes from deadly chemicals during a fire that destroyed a storage building at Boardman Landscaping Service, 7870 Southern Blvd.
1935: Police are attempting to identify a boy about 3 years old who was reported playing in the yards on Simon Street. Workers at the County Detention Home where he is staying have named him Elby, a variation on the initials for Lost Boy.
The investigation into the death of Frank Suhovecky, 13, continues, six months after the boy’s body was found in Mill Creek Park. Police are collecting handwriting samples to compare with anonymous notes received after the boy disappeared.
