S. Range, Rockets win on the track

South Range was the winner of the boys portion of the Lowellville Rocket Invitational, while the Lowellville girls track team came away a winner on Thursday.

South Range’s James Nell was boys’ running MVP for a win in the 400 (51.2 seconds), tie in the 100 (11.2) and second-place in the 200. Nell’s 100 tie was with Campbell’s Dante Dawson, who also won the 200 in 22.6.

James Felger and Floyd Kenney were Raiders winning the 800 and 1600, respectively, in 2:02.6 and 4:49.3. South Range also won the 3200 relay in 8:51.

Newton Falls’ Ryan Buchanon was both the long jump (18 feet, 7 i nches) and high jump (5-10).

Lowellville’s Monica Ciarniello was girls’ running MVP for wins in the 1600 (5:20.1) and 3200 (11:34.3) and a leg on the Rockets’ 4x800 relay. The Rockets’ relay time was 10:15.5. All three of the events in which Ciarniello participated were meet records. Ciarniello is a senior.

Newton Falls Jennifer Bjelac won the 100 hurdles in 15.6, while Brookfield’s Angie Kirila was first in the 400 in 1:02.9. Mineral ridge’s Kristen Basista won the 300 hurdles in 46.51, Lowellville’s Emily Carlson won the 800 in 2:29.4 and Springfield’s Sarah Montgomery was first in the 200 in 26.9.

In the field events, Lowellville’s Jill Cholensky won the shot put (32-1/2), Range’s Ellen Stoffer won the discus (111-11), Springfield’s Andria Lyons won the long jump in 16-101/4 and Destiny of Newton Falls had a winning jump of 5-4.
