The Canfield Rotary held its annual pancake breakfast April 18 at Canfield High School. Rotary members and members of their families volunteer each year and usually cook for and serve between 700 and 900 attendees.

On average, the group raises between $4,000 and $5,000 to use for international support and numerous community projects like the Fourth of July fireworks display at the Canfield Fairgrounds. A Chinese auction was also held to raise funds.

Canfield Rotary member Jim Strock has been the pancake breakfast chair for the past 20 years. Wendy Tisone is co-chair of the breakfast.

“The Rotary would like to thank everyone who comes every year. They are very important to us. And we would like to thank the local businesses for their donations,” Tisone said.

All supplies are donated. Donors included DiRusso’s, Bob Evans Restaurant, Mahoning County Farm Bureau/Jim Moore Farms, Ange Netta’s Bakery & Caf , Boak & Sons Roofing, Chick-fil-A, Dean Dairy, Ellsworth Berry Farm, Farmers National Bank, Canfield Giant Eagle, Higgins Reardon Funeral Home, Jim Strock’s Trigg Marine Service, Marlowe’s Coffee, Nemenz IGA - Canfield, Olfield Graphics, REACH Magazine, Rhiel Supply, Sparkle Market-Western Reserve, Walmart and White House Fruit Farm.

Sieglinde Warren, president of the Canfield Rotary, said the breakfast has been held for 40 years.

Also on display was a ShelterBox tent that the Rotary, Canfield elementary school, Canfield Village Middle School and Canfield High School students all worked together to raise money to purchase for victims of the Haiti earthquake. They raised a total of $26,300 and were able to buy 26 tents to send to Haiti.

The tents can fit 10 people and include items such as cooking utensils, tools, thermal sheets and equipment to purify water. The tents are weatherproof and can sustain winds up to 100 miles per hour.

“The display was set up so people can actually see what our community has done for people beyond the Valley. This is the true sense of the word awesome to be able to see what the kids in this community have done to help.

“The idea to collect change to raise funds for Haiti shows how the power of one idea can catch a spark and then just take off and be a huge success,” Warren said.
