Boardman comes in sixth and Fitch eighth at Federal League tennis tourney

Boardman finished in sixth place and Austintown Fitch was eighth at the Federal League boys tennis tournament on Thursday at Harvard and Stadium Courts.

Boardman’s first doubles team of Greg Ferenchak and Joe Hosa finished third. They defeated Lake 6-3, 7-6, in a first-round match, lost to Jackson in the semifinals and defeated Perry, 6-3, 6-1, in the consolation finals.

Boardman’s second doubles team of Kyle Blase and Andrew Macala finished fourth, defeated Fitch’s Josh Herington and Sam Trimm in the first round, 6-0, 6-0, before falling to Lake and Hoover in the semifinals and consolation final, respectively.

In first singles, Boardman’s Kevin O’Neil went 1-2 to finish in fifth place, and Matt Owens finished in seventh place in third singles.

For Austintown Fitch, John Phan finished in seventh place in second singles to earn two points for the Falcons, while the first doubles team of Lou Bartlo and Jeff Herington garnered two points with a seventh-place finish.

Teams earned eight points for winning the championship at each of the three singles and two doubles brackets, down to one point for eighth place.

Jackson won the tournament with 39 points, winning all three singles brackets and first doubles.

Hoover was second with 33 points and Lake was third with 30.

Jackson won the league championship, which is a combination of the regular season and tournament finishes.
