WARREN

Cory L. Anderson Jr., 36, of 2270 McCartney Road, Youngstown, was sentenced to two years in prison after pleading guilty to four felony charges for pointing a gun at and assaulting a Liberty police officer.

The crime occurred outside the Lampost Lounge on Belmont Avenue in Liberty Township on Feb. 28, 2009.

Anderson pleaded guilty before Judge W. Wyatt

McKay in Trumbull County Common Pleas Court to assault, being a felon in possession of a firearm, carrying a concealed weapon and improperly handling a firearm in a motor vehicle.

Prosecutors said Anderson was a passenger in a Mercedes Benz in the tavern parking lot about 8:30 p.m. Police officer Rob Altier

approached the vehicle and saw Anderson drinking from a beer bottle. Altier said Anderson told him he was having a drink before entering the bar.

Altier went to his cruiser to check the vehicle registration, and when he came back, Anderson was pointing a gun at him. Anderson eventually dropped the gun and got out of the car, but Anderson began to struggle with Altier and assaulted Altier, the officer said.

Altier took Anderson into custody and recovered Anderson’s gun, which the driver of the Mercedes Benz hid under a nearby vehicle.
