Ohio man sentenced in pill-popping case

TROY, Ohio (AP) — A man accused of “pill shopping” among doctors to obtain 62 prescriptions for drugs has been sentenced to 11 months in prison.

Prosecutors say 31-year-old Jarrett Peacock of Troy obtained prescriptions from 49 doctors, going as far as Fostoria in northwest Ohio and to the northern Cincinnati suburb of West Chester. He pleaded no contest Monday.

His attorney told Miami County Common Pleas Judge Jeffrey Welbaum that Peacock had been trying to deal with pain from injuries including four knee surgeries.

Ohio authorities say prescription painkiller abuse is a a growing problem, and Gov. Ted Strickland this month created a task force to combat it.
