LEXINGTON, KY.

Youngstown State University’s Samantha Formeck was named Horizon League Player of the Year after the Penguins finished second on Sunday in the Horizon League Championship at Kearney Hill Golf Links.

The Youngstown State women’s golf team cut a 12-stroke deficit after round one down to only two strokes heading into the third and final round, but the Penguins couldn’t overtake Detroit.

The Penguins were unable to defend their title from a year ago. As a team, the Penguins carded a 952 (312-314-326), while Detroit won the event by carding a 943 (300-324-319). Butler finished third with 957. By winning the event, Detroit earns an automatic bid to the NCAA golf tournament, the first in league history.

Formeck, a sophomore who was last year’s medalist at the event, was the top-finisher for the Penguins as she fired a 230 (73-77-80) to finish third. Junior Katie Rogner was one spot behind, as she tied for fourth after carding a three-round total of 233 (77-75-81).

Formeck and Rogner were named to the All-Tournament Team as a result of their efforts this weekend.

Senior Brittany Stillwagon shot a 240 (81-78-81) to finish seventh while Ann Ciavarella’s 253 (81-88-84) tied for 20th. Freshman Sarah Heimlich posted a score of 257 (85-84-88).
