Services at 10 a.m. today for former sheriff Ed Nemeth at St. Columba Cathedral
YOUNGSTOWN — The local law enforcement community is paying its respects to Edward P. Nemeth, former Mahoning County sheriff, at a 10 a.m. Mass this morning in St. Columba Cathedral.
Nemeth, who lived in Boardman and was sheriff from 1985-96, died Wednesday at the age of 62.
After a procession from the Cunningham-Becker Funeral Home in Poland, sheriff’s deputies were to carry the casket into the cathedral.
The funeral is being conducted within sight of the county justice center on Fifth Avenue, one block west of the cathedral.
In one of the major accomplishments of his law enforcement career, Nemeth opened the justice center, which tripled the county’s jail capacity, during his final year as sheriff.
