Moyer memorial to be at Ohio State

COLUMBUS

A memorial for late Ohio Supreme Court Chief Justice Thomas Moyer will be Saturday at Ohio State University.

Acting Chief Justice Paul Pfeifer says the Law Day event at the Ohio Union will “celebrate the life and legacy of the man who led Ohio’s judiciary for over 23 years.”

The 70-year-old Moyer died April 2, and his funeral was April 10.

Pfeifer says it’s appropriate to have the memorial adjacent to the university’s law school because “Moyer was a Buckeye.” Pfeifer and Moyer met as students at the law school.

The event is open to the public.

Gov. Ted Strickland has appointed Democrat Eric Brown to take over as chief justice of the all-Republican court next Monday.

Brown faces Justice Maureen O’Connor for the seat in November.

HAMILTON

Police outside Cincinnati say an officer has shot and killed a man who was beating a woman with a hammer.

Hamilton police say the shooting about 4 a.m. Sunday came after officers were called to an address to look into a possible assault. They say officers ordered the 25-year-old man to stop beating the woman, and he was shot one time in the chest when he refused.

Police say the woman, 23, had serious injuries to her head and was taken to a hospital. They did not have an update on her condition.

The officer who shot the man is on administrative leave pending an investigation.

Names were not released.
