A third charge has been added to the indictment of Shannon McBride in the death of her 23-month-old daughter.

McBride 22, was indicted Thursday by the Mahoning County grand jury on a charge of permitting child abuse. The charge was bound over Wednesday from Mahoning County Area Court Austintown.

She also is indicted on charges of aggravated murder and obstructing justice in the April 6 death of Makenzie McBride.

McBride’s boyfriend, Shawn E. Davis, 25, also is charged with aggravated murder and domestic violence in Makenzie’s death.

The pair are in county jail and scheduled for an arraignment Tuesday morning before Judge James C. Evans of common pleas court.

Bond set in drug case

Antuan S. Gardner, 23, of North Hyde Street, appeared Friday in Niles Municipal Court on two felony counts of drug trafficking after a raid on his house Thursday.

The narcotics unit of the Niles Police Department and members of the Trumbull Ashtabula Group Law Enforcement Task Force found small amounts of suspected marijuana packaged for sale, cash and a handgun during the raid, which followed a two-year investigation.

The home also had a video-surveillance system, chemicals to grow marijuana and drug paraphernalia, Niles police said.

Gardner’s bond was set at $5,000. He returns to court May 5.

Another man arrested during the raid, Avery S. Qualls, 20, of Hazelwood Avenue, Warren, pleaded no contest Friday to marijuana possession, was found guilty, fined $150 and placed on one year’s probation.

Bridge maintenance

YOUNGSTOWN

Valley Street between Andrews Avenue and McHenry Street is closed until mid-June for bridge painting by the Ohio Department of Transportation.

In addition, Andrews between Valley and the entrance ramp to Wick Avenue has various daily lane restrictions in either or both directions for bridge painting.

This work is part of a $6.6 million project to rehabilitate bridges on U.S. Route 62, U.S. Route 422 and state Route 7 over Crab Creek, Andrews, Valley and the Norfolk Southern Railroad.

Roadside cleanup

YOUNGSTOWN

Fifty students from Cardinal Mooney High School will join volunteers from Lien Forward Ohio Regional Council of Governments in picking up trash and debris alongside U.S. Route 422 and the 711 Expressway ramps from 9 to 11:30 a.m. today.

The students are among 200 local teens participating in United Way Youth Day of Caring service projects.

The area extends from the 711 ramps to the former Sharp Lumber site near the Girard-Youngstown border. V&M Star will provide refreshments.

Trees to be planted

YOUNGSTOWN

The Boulevard Block Watch will plant trees on Rush Boulevard on the South Side at 9 a.m. today.

Assisting in the effort is the Youngstown Park & Recreation Department, and funds to purchase the trees were made possible by the Raymond J. Wean Foundation.
