‘Carmina Burana’ in all of its glory

Staff report

YOUNGSTOWN

The Dana School of Music will present “Carmina Burana” at 8 p.m. Wednesday in Stambaugh Auditorium.

Ewelina Boczkowska, music-history professor, will present a pre-concert lecture at 7 p.m. in Stambaugh’s Marble Room that will provide a historical perspective on Carl Orff’s masterwork. The concert and lecture are part of the Dana’s 140th anniversary celebration.

“Carmina Burana” celebrates love in all its forms. It also has another theme: Fortuna, the capricious fate, who either grants or obstructs the lovers’ wants and desires.

The music has been used in many film scores over the years.

More than 175 musicians will be involved in the Stambaugh program, including a mass choir consisting of members from the Dana Chorale, the YSU University Chorus, the YSU Women’s Chorus and the Stambaugh Chorus.

Canfield High School’s One Octave Higher Ensemble, led by Kelly Scurich, director of vocal music at Canfield High School, also will participate.

The three vocal soloists will be Misook Yun, soprano, a professor of voice; William Ambert, tenor, voice professor at Westminster College; and Thomas Scurich, baritone, music teacher in Canfield schools.

The YSU Wind Ensemble, the Dana School’s top of three spring concert bands, will provide the instrumental accompaniment for the concert. Stephen L. Gage, YSU director of bands, will be the conductor.

Tickets for the event are $5 ($4 for seniors/students; free with YSU ID) and will be available at the door. For more information, call the Dana School of Music at (330) 941-3636.
