Warmer weather was on its way as the Watson Elementary first-grade classroom of Patty Manning hosted Lunch Box Weather.

Meteorologist Mark Monstrola visited their classroom April 13 with his midday weather forecast, spending the noon hour with the students.

During the live feed broadcast of the noon weather, WFMJ Channel 21 provided students with a Pizza Hut lunch and the opportunity to witness the broadcast of the day’s weather report from their classroom.

Students were excited to see themselves on the broadcast that was being shown live from a television in their classroom and were curious about the broadcasting equipment used by the cameraman and technician.

On hand to assist during the lunch were YSU student Dana Elias and a classroom mom, Stacey Wayland, who helped distribute lunches.

“This experience used to be part of a field trip to the Children’s Museum of the Valley, but with the museum being closed for renovations, WFMJ has brought the experience to the classroom,” said Manning.

Students consumed pizza, pretzels and drinks along with a small souvenir from the station.

During the visit, Monstrola took time to speak with the students about their recent science projects.

Student Kloe Stanton gave a brief description of her animal habitat project for the camera, explaining that she was able to choose any animal that they liked for their projects. She chose a monkey habitat that she proudly displayed during the broadcast.

The Lunch Box Weather program goes into the community and visits a different classroom every other week. The classroom teacher applies for the opportunity ahead of time.

WFMJ also participates in a monthly program called Class Act Teacher.
