1789: President-elect George Washington moves into the first executive mansion, the Franklin House, in New York.

1791: The 15th president of the United States, James Buchanan, is born in Franklin County, Pa.

1896: The Vitascope system for projecting movies onto a screen is publicly demonstrated in New York City.

1954: Hank Aaron of the Milwaukee Braves hits the first of his record 755 major-league home runs, in a game against the St. Louis Cardinals. (The Braves win, 7-5.)

1985: The Coca-Cola Co. announces it is changing the secret flavor formula for Coke (negative public reaction forces the company to resume selling the original version).

1985: Nicholas M. Wolsonovich, principal of Ursuline High School, is named superintendent of schools for the six-county Catholic diocese of Youngstown.

U.S. Rep. James A. Traficant Jr., D-17th, says the United States should provide no more aid of any sort to the Contra groups fighting the Nicaraguan government, but should send food, medical and housing assistance to the Nicaraguan people through international relief agencies.

1970: Five men are indicted on rioting or weapons charges in connection with the Stop 5 clash between Teamsters and the Fraternal Association of Steel Haulers that ended in the death of one man.

Ohio Gov. James A. Rhodes, campaigning in Cleveland for the Republican U.S. Senate nomination, says the present formula for distribution of federal funds discriminates against Ohio, which pays $1.42 to Washington for every $1 it receives.

1960: Youngstown Bishop Emmet M. Walsh dedicates the new home of the Niles Knights of Columbus, Council 1681, on Vienna Avenue.

William R. Machuga, chief deputy clerk of courts, is elevated to the clerk’s post by the Mahoning County commissioners to fill out the unexpired term of William F. Quinlan.

The age of air transport arrives in Lisbon when a helicopter pilot, R.E. Rice of Seattle, Wash., and his wife, Edna, arrive by helicopter on the front lawn of the Capehart Motel on Route 30 and register for the night.

1935: Some 640 workers and captains open the 17th annual Community Chest drive to raise $225,000 for the operations of 24 nonfederal social agencies in Youngstown.

The Jones & Laughlin Steel Corp. of Pittsburgh reports to the Securities Commission that it has paid $1.25 million in salary and bonuses over five years to George Gordon Crawford, its former president.
