Memorial Day tradition continues


Bring a folding chair, your children and a few snacks and get ready for the 106th Memorial Day Parade in Boardman May 31.

The parade will travel from Boardman Center Middle School north on Market Street, east of state Route 224 and into Boardman Township Park’s Maag Outdoor Arts Theatre where a Memorial Day Service will commence at 10 a.m.

The Boardman Kiwanis invites any Boardman group to join in the parade by assembling at the school at 9:30 a.m. Grand marshal of the parade and speaker, Mike Lacivita is a U.S. Navy veteran, member of the Ohio Senior Citizens Hall of fame, member of the Ohio Veterans Hall of Fame and local author.

Deacon Mike Kocjancik of St. Charles Catholic Church will give the invocation. Mark Luke, member of Boardman Kiwanis, will be Master of Ceremonies at the services. Lt. Col. Bill Moss, USAF (Ret.) will lead the Pledge of Allegiance and place a wreath in honor of the deceased veterans.

The National Honor Society from Boardman High School will place a wreath in honor of current military personnel serving in Iraq, Afghanistan and the rest of the world.

The Boardman Spartan Marching Band will march in the parade and the Boardman Spartan Wind Ensemble will provide music for the memorial service.

Other anticipated participants include the Boardman trustees, township officials, fire and police departments, Boardman school board, Boy Scouts, Girl Scouts, Camp Fire Girls, Kiwanis, Rotary, Lions, Boardman Civic Association, Antique, Classic and Model T car clubs, ambulance companies and bicycles. The service clubs will pass out candy to children.

In the event of rain, the service will be moved to the Boardman Middle School auditorium.
