Canfield tennis team wins big at home court

The Canfield High School boys’ tennis team defeated Struthers, 5-0 Monday.

In singles matches, Ryan Sankovic played two sets to win the match 6-2 and 6-0 over Struthers’ Nick Ragan. Mark Stanislaw won the match in two sets with scores of 6-1, 6-1. Ryan Yankush also won his match in two sets.

Dalvin and Tony El-Hayek won their doubles match in two sets, as did Mark Pagano and Tom Yankush.

Canfield softball team shuts out Beaver Local

The Cardinals’ softball team defeated Beaver Local Monday, 2-0.

Brina Sturgeon (2-2) pitched four innings and Sarah Vrabel pitched three.

Carlee Hart, Melanie West, Abby Baker and Cara Cupler had doubles.

The Cardinals had nine hits for the day and only one error.

Beaver Local managed six hits with two errors.

Canfield splits double header at tournament

The Canfield girls’ softball team dominated in game one against Columbiana with a score of 8-2.

Canfield had 11 hits and zero errors.

Pitcher Carlee Hart tossed a three-hitter.

Cara Cupler had two RBIs, while Melanie West had three.

Sarah Vrabel was 3-for-4 with a double.

Laura Beck and Kayley Keller had RBI singles.

The Cardinals were defeated by North Canton Hoover 4-1 in game two.

Brina Sturgeon had an RBI double, as did Sarah Vrabel.

Hart went 2-for-3. Canfield managed four hits with one run and one error.

Cardinals just short a victory at tournament

The Canfield girls’ softball team lost to Walsh Jesuit 3-2 at the Akron Showcase Softball Tournament Sunday.

Kasey McMurray had two hits and Brina Sturgeon had an RBI single.

Abby Baker singled and advanced on Cara Cupler’s hit and scored on a wild pitch.

Canfield’s three errors allowed Walsh to score two runs.

Canfield girls fall to Howland in track meet

The Howland girls’ track team defeated Canfield Apr. 13

Final scores were Howland 78, Canfield 72 and Liberty 14.

Canfield won the 4x800 relay with a team of Emma Lunne, Kelly Fening, Jen Love, Jillian Smith. Their time was 10:27.1.

Stephanie Carrocce took first in the 100 with a 13.2.

Emily Gleichert earned first place in the 200 with a time of 27.2.

In the discus, Maggie Bresnahan placed first with a toss of 100-8.

Leanna Hartsough took first in the high jump with a jump of 5-4.

Canfield track just short of victory over Howland

The Canfield boys’ track team lost to Howland by one and a half points.

Final scores were Howland 71.5, Canfield 70 and Liberty 22.5.

Canfield’s 4x800 team of Russell Bresson, Christian Anzuini, Luke Stefanides, Jonathan Hutnyan won the event in a time of 8:42.5.

Tom McGrath came in first place in the 400 with 54.8.

Rob Reed took first in the 800 with a time of 2:12.3.

The 4x400 squad of McGrath, Steve Hamilton, Donny DeSanto, Andrew McClusky won the event.

Dustin Brode won the shot put (62-4.5) and the discus (165- 9). Teammate Richard Rapone set a new school record in the high jump with a winning leap of 6-6.

Two home runs help Canfield defeat Howland

Melanie West and Carlee Hart hit home runs to help the Canfield girls’ softball team defeat Howland 5-3.

The game started with Howland player Melanie Cope hitting a homer in the first inning.

The Canfield girls responded with five runs and five hits. Besides the home runs, West and Hart hit doubles and Sarah Vrabel brought in a run with a sacrifice fly.

Hart (4-1) got the win, pitching four innings. Vrabel pitched the last three innings and Laura Beck caught the entire game.

The win puts Canfield at 5-3 overall and 3-1 in the AAC red division.

Canfield aces Boardman

The Canfield boys’ tennis team dominated the court Apr. 14 in its 5-0 win against Boardman.

In singles play, Ryan Sankovic won his match in two sets,, 6-1 and 6-0 against Boardman ‘s Kevin O’Neil. Canfield’s Tony El-Hayek finished his match 6-5 and 7-6 to Greg Ferinchak and Mark Dalvin defeated Joe Testa, 6-1 and 6-0.

In doubles matches, the Canfield team of Dalvin and Joe Crum rallied from a first set loss to win the final two sets 6-3 and 6-3 against Joe Hosa and Matt Owens to win the match. Mark Pagano and Tom Yankush defeated Kyle Blass and Andrew Macala of Boardman, 6-4 and 6-4.

Bates pitched no hitter

Canfield softball pitcher Carlee Hart tossed a no -itter to go 5-1 on the season and gave the girls team the 6-0 win over Niles.

Leading hitters for Canfield included Cara Cupler, who went 4-for-4. Melanie West was 2-for-4 with an RBI double and Sarah Vrabel had a 2-run single. The Canfield team had 11 hits and one error to Niles’ three errors.

Canfield boys tennis served loss to Liberty

The Canfield boys’ tennis team defeated Liberty Apr. 14, 4-1.

Two Canfield singles match players netted wins. Mark Dalvin defeated Andrew Grinstein 6-3 and 7-5 and Mark Stanislaw took the match 6-3 and 6-4 against Brett Baker.

Liberty’s Anuj Kwatra won two sets against Ryan Sankovich, 6-3 and 6-4.

In doubles, the Canfield pair of Steve Dalvin and Joe Crum and Mark Pagano and Tom Yankush got successful match wins in two sets apiece.
