Receiver appointed for Eagle Heights

A Mahoning County Common Pleas magistrate has placed Eagle Heights Academy in receivership, directing that all school business affairs and property be put under the control of Atty. Barry E. Savage of Toledo.
Savage represents the Ohio Council of Community Schools, which is the sponsor of Eagle Heights, a charter school.
The Ohio Council of Community Schools filed a complaint against Eagle Heights on Wednesday contending the school had failed to pay it nearly $22,400 for various services provided.
The complaint asked the court to order payment of the money and to appoint a receiver.
The school didn’t object to the appointment of a receiver to take control of the property.
The Rev. Kenneth Simon, president of the school board, said Eagle Heights isn’t in an adversarial position with its sponsor, and that the action was taken for the protection of the school and to close out the school year in a solvent position.
The Ohio Department of Education ordered Eagle Heights to close permanently with the end of this school year in June because of poor academic performance.
The Rev. Mr. Simon said the Ohio Council of Community Schools is still assisting in the creation of a new charter school — South Side Academy — to replace Eagle Heights this fall, serving the same K-8 student demographic.
