Softball team taking donations for charity
Staff report
Youngstown
The Youngstown State softball team is asking the community to help it turn a double play by helping the environment and local children in need.
The team is asking for any gently used sports equipment to be donated as part of the team’s third annual Hit a Home Run Through Recycling charity equipment drive.
All donations will be given to underprivileged area athletes.
The team will accept donations today at its game against Cleveland State at McCune Park in Canfield, and can be donated from 3 until 6:30 p.m.
The game is scheduled to begin at 6:30 p.m. and admission is free.
The event is sponsored by YSU, and partners with various local businesses and organizations, including the Green Team and the Youngstown Police Athletic League.
All donations will help the area in two ways.
First, the equipment will be give to local children whose families may not be able to afford it. The equipment will also be kept out of landfills.
Several locations will act as drop-off centers for the equipment for the remainder of the month.
The team hopes to collect 3,000 pieces of equipment.
