More than 230 Valley students to participate in Day of Caring

More than 230 Valley students are expected to take part in 13 community service projects during the ninth annual United Way Youth Day of Caring on Saturday.

The United Way Youth Day of Caring is an annual community-service project in which student groups from area high schools participate by completing outdoor and indoor cleanup projects, odd jobs and other activities for area nonprofit social-service agencies.

Those scheduled to participate include students from Boardman High School Interact Club, Cardinal Mooney National Honor Society and Service Club, Chaney High School Key Club, Early Childhood Student Association at Youngstown State University, Jackson Milton Students Against Drunk Driving/Key Club, Poland Seminary High School NHS and Leadership Group, South Range High School, Struthers High School NHS, Ursuline High School and The Youngstown Connection.

In addition, volunteers from the Integrity Beauty Women of Excellence and WellPoint employees are expected to take part.

The students will complete community-service projects at these sites: Children’s Center for Science and Technology, Grow Youngstown, Humility House, Lien Forward Ohio Regional Council of Governments and the V&M Clean-Up Project, Neighborhood Ministries (Kirwan Center, Rockford Center and Westside Community Center), Park Vista, United Way “6 Wishes for Success” Project, Ursuline Sisters HIV Ministry (Casa Madre), Youngstown City Scape, Youngstown Hearing and Speech Center, and YWCA of Youngstown – Discovery Place West.

The students will assemble at 8 a.m. at the YMCA in downtown Youngstown, Champion Street, for breakfast and an overview of the day and then depart for their assigned locations to complete their projects.

The students will meet at the YMCA at noon for lunch and to share their experiences and recap the day, United Way officials said.

The event is sponsored by Farmers National Bank, Panera Bread, Wedgewood Pizza, Coca-Cola, Sam’s Club and Ink’n Thread Works.
