The school board is considering whether to limit open enrollment to kindergarten through fourth grade for the 2011-12 school year.

Schools Superintendent Robert Rostan raised the idea at the board’s meeting Tuesday.

He said the idea would be to keep class sizes down to 160 pupils.

“Someone needs to start the discussion,” said Rostan, adding that the board wouldn’t have to make a decision until the fall.

Rostan told the board that kindergarten through fourth grades have more room.

There are 217 open- enrollment students this year, and there are 239 enrolled for the 2010-11 school year, he said.

That figure does not include kindergartners, who will be enrolled in August.

Rostan said that out of the 239 enrolled for the upcoming year, only 11 are middle- to high-school students.
