100 Niles residents exempt from flood insurance
NILES
A decision by city council Wednesday to revise the city’s flood plain means that nearly 100 residents will no longer have to purchase flood insurance. Premiums per home usually cost around $1,000 annually.
Mark Hess, Niles grant and development coordinator, said the Federal Emergency Management Agency approved the change after receiving a report from consultants hired by the city, which showed the streets should be exempted. The ordinance passed by council regulates development in all flood hazard areas of the city.
