Jamel Turner catches a pass during a game against Cardinal Mooney in October 2007.
When Ohio State football recruit Jamel Turner was shot in Youngstown on Friday night, he was a passenger in a Chevy Blazer driven by a man who has done prison time for drug and gun crimes.
Turner was treated in around 11:30 p.m. on Friday after being shot in the left ankle and right hip. The extent of his injuries are not known, and the police report on the incident did not mention whether Turner required surgery.
An Ohio State spokesperson said the football office was still gathering information on the incident on Monday.
Turner, 18, is a 6-foot-3, 210-pound linebacker and defensive end who gave his oral commitment to Ohio State in December of 2008.
Police searched the black Chevy Blazer that Turner and his twin, Jamal, were riding in during the shooting and found two handguns and two baggies containing what the police believe was marijuana.
The police report said those items, for now, are listed as belonging to the driver, 32-year-old Ramses Terry.
According to Mahoning County court records, Terry has previous guilty pleas to cocaine trafficking and marijuana trafficking, and in 2005 was sentenced to two years in prison for possession of cocaine and carrying a concealed weapon.
A police spokesperson said Monday night that no arrests had been made.
Terry and the Turner brothers said their vehicle was exiting the highway when a car pulled alongside them and opened fire. Police investigated the area where the victims said it took place but did not find any evidence connected to a shooting.
