1812: The fourth vice president of the United States, George Clinton, dies in Washington at age 72, becoming the first vice president to die while in office.

1836: Congress votes to establish the Wisconsin Territory.

1940: RCA publicly demonstrates its new and powerful electron microscope.

1945: During World War II, allied forces take control of the German cities of Nuremberg and Stuttgart.

1968: Pierre Elliott Trudeau is sworn in as prime minister of Canada.

1971: The Supreme Court, in Swann v. Charlotte-Mecklenburg Board of Education, unanimously upholds the use of busing to achieve racial desegregation in schools.

1985: A complaint by 175 village electors is filed in Mahoning County Common Pleas Court seeking the removal of Mayor Michael Klim over $5,000 that a state auditor’s report said is missing from the mayor’s court.

Phi Kappa Tau fraternity and Zeta Tau Alpha sorority are the winners of YSU’s 33rd annual Greek Sing at Stambaugh Auditorium.

Gov. Richard Celeste has ordered an investigation into the hiring of two convicted drug fellons by the Ohio Department of Youth Services. James E. Rogers, director of the department, fired the two employees before he resigned.

1970: Lloyd R. McCrory, assistant superintendent of Youngstown city schools, is named superintendent of Massillon schools.

Russell C. Gibbs, president of the American Laundry and Dry Cleaning Co., is restoring a neglected century home at 616 S. Lincoln Ave., Salem, which was the home of former Mayor Robert R. Johnson.

The Mahoning Valley Regional Mass Transit Authority is considering an application for a federal Department of Transportation capital grant to establish a mass transit system in the Youngstown area if the Youngstown Transit Co. goes out of business.

1960: A mild-mannered, well-dressed robber goes berserk during a robbery at Joseph Margo’s grocery store and service station at 3166 W. Federal St., terrorizing seven people and wounding two, including Margo. The suspect, a 36-year old pharmacist, is subdued by Michael Aurillo and Melvin Adams.

City Engineer J. Phillip Richley submits to Youngstown City Council a proposal for $405, 531 road resurfacing and repair program.

1935: A recount of votes cast in Smith Township April 9 shows that voters did not favor establishment of a state liquor store in the township, but voted against both the state store and taverns. The township will remain dry for at least four years.

J.C. Argetsinger, Chamber of Commerce canal committee chairman, says progress is being made toward construction of a Beaver-Mahoning rivers canal, after meeting with Major Gen. E.H. Markham of the Army Engineers.
