Billy Lyell vs Chris Gray
Billy Lyell defeats Chris Gray in a 8 round bout in Niles, OH Oct. 17, 2009.
Special to The Vindicator
Niles native Billy Lyell makes his return to the boxing ring on May 7 in Morgantown, W. Va.
Lyell (21-8, 4 KOs) will be part of a card that will be shown on NESportsTV.com.
The opponent for Lyell, trained by Jack Loew, and the rest of the card will be announced later.
The fight will be available both live and on demand for $8 and may be ordered now by visiting the Web site.
Lyell gained notoriety in 2009 after winning a decision over previously unbeaten Irish middleweight John Duddy in a stunning upset in Newark, N.J.
Lyell followed that win with a second-round TKO over Chris Overbey and eight-round decision over Chris Gray.
Those performances set Lyell up for a shot at IBF middleweight titleholder Sebastian Sylvester.
Lyell took the title fight with Sylvester on less than two weeks notice and was TKO’d in the 10th round of a hard fought bout.
Lyell took the fight after original challenger Pablo Navascues had to pull out due to testing positive for a banned substance.
Lyell also has been in the ring with current junior middleweight contender Vanes Matirosyan, James Kirkland and former world champion Yory Boy Campas.
