Canfield falls to Walsh Jesuit


AKRON

Kasey McMurray’s double and Brina Sturgeon’s RBI single weren’t enough on Sunday as the Canfield High softball team lost to Walsh Jesuit, 3-2, at Firestone Stadium.

Maddie Sheppard doubled and scored twice for Walsh Jesuit (14-1).

The Cardinals (7-5) split two games on Saturday. In an 8-2 win over Columbia, Melanie West hit a three-run triple while Cara Cupler’s two hits knocked in two runs. Sarah Vrabel’s three hits included a double while Laura Beck and Kayley Keeler each had RBI singles.

For Columbia (7-3), Danielle Riolo tripled.

In the other game, Rachel Harris homered and doubled to lead North Canton Hoover (9-2) to a 4-1 victory. Also hitting doubles for the Vikings were Ashley Hall and Alex Marcantonio.

For Canfield, Carlee Hart had two hits while Sturgeon and Vrabel doubled.

Fitch 9, Salem 2

SALEM

Winning pitcher Amanda Callahan (4-2) struck out 10 batters and contributed a RBI single for the Falcons. Carly Ortz homered, Sarah Garcia doubked and Hayley Martinelli had two hits.

For the Quakers, Becca Devlin had two hits.

Fitch 16, Lowellville 2

LOWELLVILLE

Alyssa Jones’ three hits drove in three runs for the Falcons (5-3). Ortz and Stephanie Berdis also had three hits while Alana Callahan’s two hits brought home two runs. Winning pitcher Emily Purnell (1-1) had two hits and two RBIs.

For the Rockets, Gina Stoutra doubled and Gabby Circone had two hits.

Warren Harding 9-9, Bedford 8-6

WARREN

In the first game, winning pitcher Tania Dukes’ two hits included a homer. Samantha Baumgardner and Anastashia Garrison had three hits each. Ashley Bugos’ two hits included a homer and drove in three runs. Creelyn Provitt’s singled home the winning run in the bottom of the eighth inning.

In the second game, Dukes homered and doubled for three RBIs. Baumgardner had two hits.

Eddie Rovnak’s second triple of the game drove in two runs with two out in the last of the seventh inning as Chaney (5-8) defeated Lowellville, 10-9, at Cene Park.
